Japandi often describes a meeting of Japanese restraint and Scandinavian warmth. To make it personal, focus on proportions, clear surfaces and the feel of materials. A calming bathroom is planned down to its storage and tap details.
01
Start with what should stay clear
Draw everyday movements before choosing the decoration. Where will a toiletry bag sit, a towel hang and bottles be stored? A cluttered shelf changes the atmosphere more than a slight colour difference. Size the furniture around users’ actual needs.
Empty space then becomes useful. It gives room to a basin, mirror or well-designed spout. Keep a clear surface near the water point and avoid adding a niche merely to fill a wall.
02
Combine readable wood with a calm mineral
Wood or wood-look furniture can be the warm focal point. For finishes, low-contrast mineral ceramic creates a quiet background. Natural or reproduced grain should follow a logical direction across fronts and returns.
If you choose wood-effect floor tiles, check their suitability for the intended area. Visual continuity does not replace appropriate finish selection, required falls or substrate preparation. Apparent simplicity rests on these decisions.
03
Select taps with the right proportions
A restrained line need not be tiny. The tap must suit the basin’s size, jet reach and ease of control. A wall-mounted model clears the top but requires precise coordination with the finished wall.
Brushed finishes can complement a gentle scheme; a small black accent gives a stronger silhouette. Compare side profiles, not just front views. The spout’s design contributes to balance between furniture, basin and mirror.
04
Reduce the number of visible details
Align sockets, accessories and joints with the project’s axes where possible. Choose the Geberit plate early so its shape and finish fit the wall. Keep its maintenance access clear.
For lighting, favour useful light on the face and a pleasant general atmosphere. Highly theatrical grazing light can instead multiply shadows on textures. Assess the whole arrangement in morning and evening conditions.
Before you decide
- Plan storage before accessories.
- Limit competing patterns.
- Check spout profile and reach.
- Coordinate the wall’s visible details.
The essentials
Your questions, our guidance.
Must natural wood be used everywhere?
No. Warmth can come from a single cabinet, the chosen tones and lighting. Each material must remain suited to its location.
Do chrome taps suit this atmosphere?
Yes. A simple, well-proportioned form used sparingly can fit naturally into a mineral and wood palette.
