Installation and expansion
Plan movement, supports and maintenance access before installation.
Reliable HDPE drainage requires more than sound welds. Temperature changes alter pipe length. Anchor points, guides and expansion provisions must therefore be coordinated with the route, supporting structure and expected service conditions.
Understand thermal expansion
Geberit states a linear expansion coefficient of 0.17 mm per metre per kelvin for its HDPE pipes. For example, a free 6 m run exposed to a 40 °C temperature difference has a theoretical length change of 40.8 mm: 0.17 × 6 × 40. This illustrates expansion; it does not determine the support design.
Arrange anchor points and guides
An anchor takes the loads identified in the design. A guide maintains the route while allowing the intended movement. Expansion sockets or other selected provisions must follow the system instructions. Avoid accidentally locking a sliding zone or transferring forces to the structure that have not been considered in the design.
Coordinate installation with the building
For exposed runs, allow for supports, clearances and cleaning access. For embedded pipework, plan openings, restraint during pouring and checks before concealment. Underground installation requires assessment of loads, bedding, backfill and the system's permitted conditions. Each setting needs its own appropriate installation detail rather than a single universal arrangement.
Address penetrations and maintenance
Identify separating walls and areas sensitive to noise. Fire protection must match the wall, diameter and a documented configuration; pipe material alone does not establish fire performance. Retain cleaning access and prepare as-built information showing the actual route, installed references and completed inspections. Coordinate these details before walls or slabs become inaccessible.

Frequently asked questions
Should every bracket lock the pipe?
No. Its function depends on the arrangement: anchor or guide. Locking all brackets can prevent planned movement and transfer loads to the network.
Can Geberit HDPE be cast in concrete?
Yes, in configurations permitted by the system. Plan joints, expansion provisions, fixing and pre-pour checks with the project team.
Does expansion calculation determine socket length?
No. Installation temperature, active pipe lengths, the fixing arrangement and instructions for the selected accessory also need to be considered.
