A double basin seems an immediate answer to shared mornings. It becomes truly comfortable when two people can use the furniture, mirror and storage without crossing paths. Before choosing a width, draw the simultaneous movements. This is a practical way to address everyday comfort in current residential projects.
01
Start with the occupants’ routines
Note when two people use the bathroom together and what each needs. Two bowls help with certain routines; a generous top with one basin may be better when space for toiletries is the priority.
Place two figures on the plan and check the route behind them. The vanity width does not tell the whole story: a door, radiator or nearby shower can reduce the usable area. Test opening movements while both positions are occupied.
02
Distribute mirror and light
Each user should be able to see themselves without moving towards the centre. One large shared mirror or two separate mirrors can work, provided their axes align with the basins. Draw the arrangement in elevation to judge its proportions.
Study face lighting at both positions. A decorative light in the middle does not guarantee equal comfort on the right and left. Also check window reflections and control positions before installing the equipment.
03
Provide two accessible service zones
Two basins require a coherent arrangement of supplies and waste connections. Drawers may restrict the space below the top. Agree trap selection and furniture design with the installer and manufacturer.
Check spout reach and the tap holes at each place. A one-piece double washbasin does not offer the same possibilities as a top carrying two countertop basins. The selected reference’s technical sheet takes precedence over the appearance of a similar composition.
04
Share storage without complicating it
Allocate drawers and provide a clear surface beside each bowl. Shared products can occupy a central area that is accessible without intruding on the other person’s place. The furniture then supports order rather than requiring constant tidying.
EDIFIS can compare Sanibel, Bluestone or Geberit basin tops and furniture for your project. Bring the plan and list of uses, then confirm dimensions, supports and tap references. The composition becomes a response to your actual routines.
Before you decide
- Compare two bowls with a larger clear surface.
- Test circulation when both places are occupied.
- Coordinate mirrors, light and taps.
- Allow space for traps and drawers.
The essentials
Your questions, our guidance.
Is a double basin always better for a couple?
No. It depends on schedules, routines and space. A single basin with a generous top can be more comfortable in some rooms.
Can a second basin be added to existing furniture?
The support, holes, services and storage must be checked. Available width alone does not validate the alteration.
