Two finishes of the same design can produce very different rooms. Polished surfaces reflect their surroundings; matt finishes give a more diffuse reading. Consider light, adjoining surfaces and intended use, without confusing appearance with technical performance.
01
Polish brings reflections into the design
A polished surface can emphasise veining and give a pattern more depth. It also reflects windows, lights and objects in the room. These reflections can enrich the composition or make it busier.
Before choosing, tilt a sample beneath a light source. In a brightly lit bathroom, also consider what it will reflect opposite. A striking wall needs carefully controlled visual surroundings.
02
Matt favours a calmer appearance
A matt finish can support a mineral interior and give volumes more prominence. It is not necessarily uniform: smooth surfaces, textures and relief respond differently to touch and light.
In an open kitchen, this approach can work with restrained cabinet fronts. Conversely, a small glossy splashback can provide an interesting contrast. There is no need for the same finish throughout the house.
03
Read the data sheet in wet areas
A matt appearance alone does not prove suitability for a shower floor. Check manufacturer guidance for the exact use, particularly with water and bare feet. Correct falls and drainage remain essential.
For kitchens, consider traffic, cleaning and declared product use. A wall reference is not automatically suitable for floors. Read size, thickness and finish together.
04
Compare care on a sample
Marks appear differently depending on colour, gloss and lighting. Rather than assuming one finish is always easier, ask for care instructions and examine a sample after cleaning with the permitted product.
Finally, coordinate grout colour. Strong contrast emphasises the grid; a shade close to the tile calms the surface. In both cases choose grout for its use and installation, not colour alone.
Before you decide
- Observe reflections from different angles.
- Check the intended use of each reference.
- Read wet-area guidance.
- Coordinate grout colour and care.
The essentials
Your questions, our guidance.
Are matt tiles necessarily slip-resistant?
No. Confirm the required performance through technical data for the area concerned.
Can matt and polished surfaces be combined?
Yes. A clear distribution, such as an accent wall with quieter surrounding surfaces, helps maintain coherence.
