Channel or central drain: choose your shower's geometry.

Linear or point drainage: compare falls, tiling, maintenance and installation height before drawing the shower.

Linear drainage and a point drain can suit very different projects. The relevant choice depends on floor construction, tile layout and maintenance access. Comparing these criteria gives the chosen design a practical reason, beyond a preference for a line or a compact grate.

01

Compare the shape of the sloping surfaces

A point drain gathers water towards one localised area. A drainage line can organise the falls differently, depending on its position. Draw these surfaces with the tiler: they directly affect cuts and junctions.

Large tiles need particular attention where planes change. Smaller modules can accommodate some geometries more easily but create more joints. No tile format should be chosen independently of the drainage solution.

02

Study the assembly hidden beneath the grate

Compare drain bodies and connections, not just their appearance. Required height, outlet position and installation conditions can decide the choice during renovation. A discreet grate can cover a larger assembly than expected.

The Geberit catalogue distinguishes point-drain solutions and CleanLine systems; Vogi offers several channels. For each option, request the full composition and installation documents. Also identify parts that must be ordered separately.

03

Compare flow requirements with the data

Select the drain alongside the shower's operating requirements. Compare the flow to be discharged with system performance under the manufacturer's stated conditions. The number of outlets that can run simultaneously is part of this study.

A sales figure does not replace investigation of the downstream network. Connection diameter, route and levels must be consistent. Have the installer check the whole arrangement, especially when a new shower retains existing pipework.

04

Choose maintenance you can live with

Examine how removable parts are lifted, hair is removed and surfaces cleaned. These tasks must remain possible after screens and accessories are installed. Where possible, request a demonstration on a sample.

The finish can then coordinate with the taps or covering. A tile-in grate also requires careful detailing of its added facing. Keep the documentation and a photograph of the components before closure to simplify future identification.

Before you decide

  1. Draw the falls for each option.
  2. Compare complete drain assemblies.
  3. Check the existing connection.
  4. Try the cleaning access.

The essentials

Your questions, our guidance.

Is a channel always more effective than a central drain?

No. Capacity depends on the models and installation. Visible shape cannot rank performance.

Can large tiles be retained with a point drain?

That depends on the geometry and acceptable cuts. The tiler should validate a plan compatible with drainage and the selected product.
