Public facilities

Accessible basins: check approach, actions and accessories.

Plan an accessible wash station by studying clear space below the basin, controls and accessories with users and project professionals.

An accessible basin is designed as a complete wash station. The ceramic shape alone is not enough if a trap blocks approach, the tap is too far away or soap is out of reach. Connect user needs with drawings and the requirements applying to the premises.

01

Start with the person and setting

Clarify use: seated or standing, possible assistance and intended independence. Study the route to the basin, doors and obstacles with the design team.

For a facility in Tunisia, have competent professionals determine applicable dimensions and requirements. Dimensions from a foreign brochure do not automatically constitute local regulations.

02

Examine the space beneath the bowl

Draw a section beneath the basin including fixings, trap and pipes. The usable space must remain consistent with the intended approach, rather than later being occupied by furniture or a bin.

Geberit highlights lower clearance and connection positions in its accessibility guidance. Check the exact arrangements for the chosen reference, including necessary protection around pipework.

03

Test controls and useful objects

Assess spout reach, access to controls and where hands enter the bowl. An easy-to-operate control does not solve a tap located too far from the usable edge.

Include soap, mirror, hand drying and any shelf in the same trial. Seek user feedback where possible; the route must remain coherent after all accessories are fitted.

04

Approve and preserve the arrangement

Have project decision-makers approve drawings and selections before work starts. A product described as suitable does not itself demonstrate compliance of the entire room.

After installation, check actual access and document the configuration. Include keeping routes clear and repositioning obstructive movable objects in operating procedures.

Before you decide

  1. Define use requirements.
  2. Draw lower clear space.
  3. Test controls and accessories.
  4. Keep routes clear after installation.

The essentials

Your questions, our guidance.

Does an accessible basin make the whole room compliant?

No. Layout, access and other equipment must be assessed together.

Can storage be added beneath the basin later?

Only after checking that it does not obstruct approach, movements or planned technical access.
