The return of small formats and nuanced surfaces gives grout a highly visible role. Its colour can calm a wall or emphasise every tile. To avoid surprises, choose it using an assembled sample and the intended conditions of use, at the same time as the covering.
01
Define the joint’s role
A shade close to the tile’s average colour generally softens the grid. A contrast makes it more noticeable and emphasises the laying direction. Try both approaches using several pieces, especially when the covering has substantial variation or relief.
Do not compare only two small colour sticks placed on a tile. Joint width and repetition across a wall change the perception. For a short splashback, a few rows assembled on a board already provide a better sense of rhythm.
02
Choose a suitable product too
Colour is only one criterion. Grout must suit the covering, substrate and location. Have the contractor determine the solution using manufacturer requirements, particularly in wet areas and where cleaning imposes specific constraints.
Decorative grout does not replace waterproofing. Junctions requiring special treatment must remain identified in the project. Avoid insisting on the same product everywhere for colour consistency without examining each junction’s function.
03
Judge a genuinely dry sample
The colour perceived during application is not the reference for final approval. Respect the manufacturer’s specified drying time before accepting the result. Observe the board in daylight and under the intended lighting, orienting it like the future wall or floor.
With Cifre small formats and Atlas Concorde collections offered by EDIFIS, combine several tiles from the selected range. Add the nearby tap or profile finish. This tests the whole arrangement without relying on a photograph altered by a phone screen.
04
Plan consistent cleaning
Request initial and routine cleaning instructions for both tile and grout. A product suitable for ceramic may not suit another adjacent element. Keep the product references and avoid aggressive home remedies not approved for the complete assembly.
Plan inspections of joints exposed to water and have any defects addressed. Darker colour does not eliminate maintenance; it changes the visibility of certain marks. The right choice combines appearance, use and a realistic cleaning method.
Before you decide
- Compare matching and contrasting shades.
- Validate the product for its use.
- Observe a dry sample board.
- Keep the cleaning instructions.
The essentials
Your questions, our guidance.
Is white grout always the most discreet?
No. It can contrast strongly with beige, grey or coloured tiles. Discretion depends on the actual combination.
Can joints be omitted to keep a continuous effect?
No. The design must respect installation requirements and the joints needed by the system.
