Surfaces

How many tiles should you order? Go beyond floor area.

Measure surfaces, returns and cuts before ordering tiles in Tunisia. Build a quantity schedule you can check, instead of applying an automatic allowance.

A room’s floor area does not tell you how many boxes to order. Tile size, laying direction and the surfaces actually covered all affect the calculation. For a project in Tunisia, measure each product separately and have the installer approve the quantities before ordering.

01

Separate areas by product

Draw each floor and wall with its measurements. Divide irregular rooms into simple shapes, then add their areas. For walls, specify the actual tiled height: it may be lower than the ceiling.

Identify openings, niches, window reveals and returns. Do not deduct an opening without counting the surfaces around its sides. Photographs help reveal details missing from the general plan.

02

Include cuts in the calculation

Give the installer the exact tile size and intended pattern. Diagonal layouts, walls that are not parallel or a vein pattern that must continue can create offcuts that are difficult to reuse.

Ask for an estimate based on the layout, rather than a fixed percentage. An offcut reused elsewhere must not be counted twice. Large slabs particularly benefit from a piece-by-piece calculation.

03

Count special pieces separately

Skirting, stair pieces and profiles are measured according to their packaging and purpose. A length of skirting cannot simply be converted to floor area without knowing how it will be cut.

Separate installation needs from future spare tiles. Spares serve a different purpose: keeping pieces for a possible repair. Show them on their own line so the final order remains understandable.

04

Convert measurements into boxes

Check the area or number of pieces per box for the selected product. Round up to whole packs, then verify that the total covers the approved quantity schedule.

Send EDIFIS a table listing room, reference, size, finish and quantity. Confirm packaging and availability before fixing the installation date, and retain the plan revision used for the calculation.

Before you decide

  1. Measure every area.
  2. Approve the cuts.
  3. Separate spare quantities.
  4. Round up by box.

The essentials

Your questions, our guidance.

Should the same percentage always be added?

No. Waste depends on the plan, tile size and opportunities to reuse offcuts.

Is floor area enough to place an order?

No. Check packaging, special pieces and additional surfaces too.
