Covering existing tiles may seem to shorten a renovation. Feasibility nevertheless depends on what lies beneath and on the additional height. Have the existing floor examined before ordering: the new finish should not merely conceal a problem that is still active.
01
Record the existing floor’s condition
Mark cracks, loose pieces, damaged areas and moisture traces. Record their location and, if known, how they have developed. These observations support a diagnosis but do not replace professional inspection.
MAPEI stresses that the substrate must be sound and stable. Ask the installer how the old covering’s bond will be checked and which areas need attention before approving an overlay.
02
Measure the complete added thickness
The finished height includes every layer of the chosen system, not only the tile. Request a section showing any preparation, adhesive and covering to establish the actual final level.
Check doors, thresholds, steps, skirting and fitted appliances. In a kitchen, also check the route for removing a dishwasher: a raised floor can make future maintenance difficult.
03
Resolve causes before adding a finish
Unexplained cracking or moisture needs investigation. Ask for a documented solution addressing existing movement and junctions, rather than selecting a product described as universal.
Preparation depends on the old substrate and installation system. Have the professional confirm compatible products and working conditions instead of borrowing a recipe from a different site.
04
Compare two complete approaches
Where the diagnosis warrants it, request options for retaining and removing the existing floor. Compare preparation, waste removal, threshold alterations and time before use alongside the tile price.
Bring the approved levels and room uses to EDIFIS when selecting formats. Order after the technical approach is chosen; any height change must reach the other trades’ drawings.
Before you decide
- Inspect the existing floor.
- Calculate the finished level.
- Check openings.
- Approve the complete system.
The essentials
Your questions, our guidance.
Can every old tiled floor be covered?
No. Condition, stability, moisture and available heights determine feasibility.
Do thin tiles solve height problems?
They reduce part of the thickness, but all layers and junctions must be measured.
